Horrific Injuries Linked to BP Dispersant Corexit

Exposure to chemical dispersants BP used in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill left a commercial diver with seizures, unable to walk and going blind - and two members of his dive team committed suicide, the man claims in Harris County Court.
David Hogan and his wife sued BP and NALCO Co. - which made the Corexit oil dispersants - and a host of other defendants, including Halliburton, Transocean, ConocoPhillips, Xplore Oil & Gas and Stuyvesant Dredging Co.

NEW ORLEANS — By arresting a former BP engineer Tuesday, federal prosecutors for the first time showed their hand in the Gulf oil spill case, saying they were probing whether BP PLC and its employees broke the law by intentionally lowballing how much oil was spewing from its out-of-control well.

BP Finalizes Oil Spill Settlement With Plaintiffs

When the settlement was first negotiated in March, BP executives said they expected to pay $7.8 billion from a $20 billion fund the company set aside to pay for costs associated with the spill. According to a statement from the company's website posted yesterday, the settlement has been finalized.

Shell Says Sheen Dissipating

(Kristen Hays-Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell said an oil sheen near two of its offshore Gulf of Mexico oil and natural gas platforms was dissipating Thursday, and it was "very confident" its installations were not to blame.
The Hague-based company said the "orphan spill," estimated to be about six barrels of oil, was breaking up. Shell said it would continue to monitor the sea floor with a pair of underwater robots.
"Shell's subsea surveillance today and tomorrow will continue to determine if there is a connection between natural seeps and this orphan sheen," the company said.

As the second anniversary of the BP Deepwater Horizon offshore platform accident approaches on April 20, the sky rocketing gasoline prices at the pumps have fueled calls of “drill, baby, drill” to increase domestic oil production. The prospect of extensive deepwater oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, the Arctic waters, and elsewhere is now stronger than ever.
